TalkSPORT’s South American football expert Tim Vickery suggested that there is a real belief in the continent that Roberto Firmino can become a top player.
It may be a deal that surprises some United fans if they manage to complete it, but Vickery holds no doubt that it would be a productive one for Louis van Gaal.
“There is a real belief here (in South America) that he’s a player who is only going to get better,” he said.
United have the resources to be able to pay any fee that the German club want and to fend off competition from other sides in the race to get him.
How he would fit into Manchester United’s midfield is interesting, because there are already good options for the side in terms of playmakers.
Juan Mata and Ander Herrera are two examples of players who can play there, with Wayne Rooney also possessing the ability to drop off from the top of the attack.
Van Gaal will already be busy working away on deals to improve his team looking ahead to next season, with a deal for Memphis Depay already wrapped up.
There is arguably a need for a new right-back, a new centre back and a new striker, with a new goalkeeper added to the list if David De Gea takes a move to Real Madrid.
If van Gaal can get his business done early, the players will have a good amount of time to gel before they chase the Premier League title.
