Former Manchester United defender was impressed with Liverpool's Emre Can for Germany under-21s.

Germany under-21 captain Emre Can got his tournament off to an ideal start by scoring in his country's opener against Serbia.

Can was playing in central midfield, and his performance and goal caught the eye of former England international Rio Ferdinand, who took to Twitter to praise him.

The ex-Manchester United centre-back also took a little dig at the decision of Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers to play him in defence during the season.

Can's limitations in defence were badly exposed on the final day of the season against Stoke City, a game in which Liverpool lost 6-1, and will have to repeat on the opening day of 2015/16.

His performance in Germany's 1-1 draw with Serbia was his opening salvo of the summer in an attempt to earn a chance to play in his more natural midfield role next time Liverpool play at the Britannia.

Germany's group is wide open, with hosts Czech Republic losing to Denmark in the opener, and Can and co have it all to do to reach the knockout phases.
