Belgian giants Anderlecht want no less that €10 million before agreeing a deal to sell the 20-year-old centre-back, and have already been approached concerning his transfer by German club Borussia Monchengladbach.
They originally offered €8 million to sign him, but have now upped their offer to €9 million plus add-ons. It has not been accepted yet, and the two clubs are in negotiations to ensure that the add-on package passes their asking price.
Mbemba, a Congolese international, is highly-rated at Anderlecht having graduated from their academy, and has already featured for the first-team 76 times.
Tottenham showed their interest in the talented star prior to the signing of Kevin Wimmer, and there is no indication as to whether they will make a move for him following the Austrian’s arrival at White Hart Lane.
Newcastle have yet to strengthen their back-line this summer, despite a clear need to, and Mbemba remains a target.
However, they may be put off by the asking price, which is large for a player with no Premier League experience and no guarantees of his adaptation to English football.
Yet, he has proven himself in the Premier League, and looks well set to fulfil his potential, and the Magpies should look to splash the cash on a player who would improve one of the weak positions in their team.
