Southampton are reportedly close to securing a replacement for Manchester United-linked Clyne (per the Daily Star) in the form of Sporting Lisbon right-back Cedric Soares, according to The Daily Mail.
The 23-year-old has previously been linked with a move to The Britannia Stadium by the Daily Telegraph and Stoke City are believed to have had a bid accepted, but Southampton have matched it and Soares has opted for the Saints.
With Clyne’s departure seemingly inevitable, the pressure was on for a suitable replacement to be found and it appears Southampton have found their man.
Should a transfer be pushed through, Soares will arrive shortly after being endorsed by a Portuguese player already plying his trade at St Mary’s. Jose Fonte spoke of the need for Southampton to secure Soares’ signing yesterday in the Daily Star, and it would appear as though he has got his wish.
Southampton are reportedly holding out for £15 million for Clyne but it remains to be seen whether Liverpool, who have been linked by the Express, or Manchester United will shell out that much for the England right-back.
If he is indeed sold, and Soares manages to adapt to the Premier League as well as some of Southampton’s signings from last year, it could prove to be an inspired piece of business.
