HITC Sport has been told by sources close to the player that Norwich City are readying a bid for Chesterfield’s highly-rated forward Sam Clucas.
The versatile 24-year-old, who filled in at left-back for the Spireites at times last season, is generating plenty of interest ahead of the summer transfer window.
Two approaches for his services have already been knocked back, with Wigan Athletic among those to have made a formal offer.
It is understood that the Latics, who are preparing for life in the third tier following their relegation out of the Championship, were looking to pay £700,000 for Clucas with a further £300,000 dependent on appearances and promotion bonuses.
With Chesterfield prepared to stand firm on a player they only signed on a three-year deal from Mansfield Town 12 months ago, interested parties are being made aware that they will have to dig a little deeper.
A switch to the top tier would complete a rapid rise for Clucas, who was playing non-league football with Hereford as recently as 2013.
He has impressed in the League ranks, though, proving himself to be a creative influence with a keen eye for goal – as shown by his return of 12 efforts in 49 appearances last season.
