Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla has been quoted by the London Evening Standard suggesting that the team’s defence will be crucial next season.
Although Cazorla is an attack minded individual, he feels the Gunners need to be rock solid at the back when the new campaign gets underway as the club chase success in all competitions under Arsene Wenger.
“One of the key areas we have to focus on next season is to be a very strong defensive team,” he said.
“If we’ve got those things under control our offence is already good enough. We need to make sure that the positioning of our backline is strong and always stays that way.”
Arsenal’s defensive record last season wasn’t too bad; only Chelsea in the top six conceded fewer goals and they won the Premier League title.
The main issue in the mind of Arsene Wenger could be consistency because there were occasions last season where the Gunners looked as though they had a defence better suited to a position in the bottom half of the table.
It was arguable that at times, Arsenal left far too many players forward which left space to be exploited and players exposed in the backline, with the club taking a risk as they went in search of attacking dominance.
If Wenger can ensure that the defence is impressive, it will give the rest of the team more confidence and put a spring into the step of players like Cazorla.
The talent and experience is there, with an exciting defensive signing made in the form of Gabriel last winter.
Arsenal have the resources to back that up with another option in Calum Chambers. Hopefully no one will be talking about any defensive issues next year.
