City will reportedly move for the 25-year-old midfielder if a bid for priority target Paul Pogba fails.
With Christian Benteke’s future the subject of ongoing speculation, Aston Villa fans have now been forced to face rumours of a potential departure for another of their star men.
Reports emerged last night that captain Fabian Delph has been added to Manchester City’s growing list of summer transfer targets, as the Blues look to top English players to both help fill their homegrown quota and improve their ageing squad [h/t Telegraph].
Juventus star Paul Pogba is still believed to be Manuel Pellegrini’s top target ahead of the transfer window opening next month but the Villa midfielder is said to be an appealing alternative should a potential £80 million bid fail.
The reports come just five months after Delph penned a new deal at Villa Park until 2019 to thwart rumours of a potential summer exit, having been linked with the likes of Everton, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur at the time.
Having broken into the England line-up thanks to his form over the past two seasons, new Villa boss Tim Sherwood labelled the former Leeds United starlet the Premier League’s “best midfielder” following last month’s 3-2 win over Everton, while his leadership on and off the pitch has also seen him appointed the club’s new permanent skipper.
That in mind, it is more than understandable that big-spending clubs would be after his signature but, despite seeing the likes of Gareth Barry and James Milner lured to the Etihad Stadium in the recent past, the majority of Villa fans do not seem to think there is much chance of Delph making the same move.
Here is how some reacted on Twitter upon hearing of the rumours.
The money #avfc could demand for Delph means it would make no sense for City.— Tom McGowan (@tompmcgowan) June 16, 2015
Delph for Man City? I've heard it all now! He has 4 years left on his latest new & much improved deal & now a regular for England. > #AVFC— Ryan (@RyanPitcher) June 16, 2015
One thing the Delph to City links show is their piss poor transfer planning, could've bagged him for hardly anything few months back! #avfc— Rob Jones (@UpTheAstonVilla) June 16, 2015
Delph wont be going anywhere , got his head screwed on #AVFC— AVFC Transfer Tweet (@AVFCTransTweet) June 16, 2015
The Delph rumours don't worry me at all. He's going no where!! Unless they offer £50m and I will pack his bags for him! #avfc— olly (@OllyWootton) June 17, 2015
