According to the latest report from France Football, Southampton have made a €10 million [£7.2m] plus bid for Lille star Idrissa Gueye while Arsenal are also credited with an interest.
The Senegalese international has impressed with Lille over the past 12 months, making 32 French top-flight appearances and earning plenty of plaudits for his role in the team’s recovery.
However, it is a third English side in Southampton who have taken the lead in the race for his signature, fresh reports from France claiming Lille have an offer on the table from St. Mary’s.
“Idrissa Gueye has a proposal from Southampton. The English are ready to exceed €10m plus bonuses for this transaction but would wait for the final departure of Morgan Schneiderlin,” France Football explains.
The Saints will be hopeful of adding to their squad in order to replicate their fine Premier League campaign last season, but immediate attentions may be to find the perfect replacement for Schneiderlin.
Schneiderlin is widely tipped to leave the south coast outfit this summer, and targeting Gueye as a replacement is sound business considering his influential performances last season.
The 25-year-old averaged 3.1 tackles and 2.8 interceptions per league encounter, while also contributing as a threat in the attacking third with four goals and two assists.
