Manchester United reportedly interested in signing Axel Witsel

Could a player long-linked with Manchester United finally be about to make the move?

According to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport, Manchester United are interested in signing Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel from Zenit St. Petersburg this summer.

It is being claimed that the 26-year-old midfielder is keen for a new challenge after 115 appearances for the Russian club and that both United and Chelsea are interested in bringing him to the Premier League.

United are certainly in more need of quality midfield reinforcements and Witsel has previously performed well alongside Marouane Fellaini at international level, so what chance a reunion at Old Trafford?

United are likely to be very busy in the summer transfer market, with manager Louis van Gaal needing to strengthen at centre-back, right-back, central midfield and up front, and Witsel could be an effective option to play alongside (or cover for) Michael Carrick.

United are a different side when the England international is unavailable and that is something their manager will be hoping to rectify in the months ahead.

Witsel has two years left on his current contract at Zenit but it remains to be seen how much it would cost to bring him to Old Trafford.
