Jose Fonte: Southampton need to sign Cedric Soares

Jose Fonte wants Southampton to sign his Portugal teammate, despite interest from Everton and Stoke.

O Jogo reported that Southampton are close to completing a deal for Sporting CP defender Soares, and Jose Fonte has told the Daily Star that he is a signing the Saints ‘need’ to make.

The Portuguese centre-back said: “I would like to have Cedric as a team-mate at Southampton. He is a great player and our club needs him.”

The same O Jogo report also claimed that Everton and Stoke City have been showing an interest in him, but it is the South Coast club who are leading the race for the international defender’s signature.

A right-back, Soares has been capped three times for Portugal, and has shown himself to be a classy talent, despite his young age of 23.

The Saints currently own Nathaniel Clyne, but a wealth of interest in him could see a bigger Premier League club move for his services this summer.

That would leave a void in the right-back position, and Soares has been targeted as the English international’s replacement at St Mary's Stadium.

Fonte is clearly a big fan of his compatriot, and Soares is the kind of young, budget signing that Southampton have proven to have great success with in recent years.

He would be a great player for Ronald Koeman’s men to bring in, and not only has he proven to be a talent in his own right, playing alongside Fonte would give Southampton the defensive chemistry that the duo have shown during various outings for their national side.
