Report: Micah Richards could be used at centre-back by Tim Sherwood

Departing Manchester City defender Micah Richards is reportedly being targeted by Newcastle United, West Ham United, Aston Villa and Sunderland.

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood could use Micah Richards as a centre-back next season, according to The Daily Mail.

It has been reported by the British newspaper that England international defender Richards will join the Villans this week.

The 26-year-old will arrive at Villa Park as a free agent, having already decided to leave Manchester City when his current contract runs out at the end of the month.

The Mirror recently claimed of Sunderland’s interest in Richards while The Northern Echo reported of Newcastle United’s keenness, and The Sun stated that West Ham United want him.

Richards is a right-back, but The Daily Mail claim that Villa boss Sherwood is considering deploying him in central defence in the 2015-16 season.

“Despite spending most of his career as a right back, moving inside has always been viewed as a natural progression for Richards and is something that has always appealed to the 26-year-old,” stated the report.

It added: “With Ron Vlaar's future at Villa Park unclear, Sherwood may have a ready-made replacement for the Dutchman should he leave this summer.”

If Ron Vlaar does leave Villa this summer, then moving Richards to central defence seems a good idea.

It will mean that Villa will not have to sign a new centre-back, and they will also get a versatile defender.

It will be interesting to see how Richards plays as a centre-back. The Englishman’s progress in recent years has been impeded by injuries and lack of regular action, and perhaps at the start of his Villa career he should be played as a right-back.
