Newcastle United legend Bob Moncur told the Chronicle that he feels whoever the club appointed as manager, the club were never going to win over every fan.
Steve McClaren was confirmed as the club’s next manager last week and Moncur feels positive that the club have taken a step in the right direction.
“Whoever we appointed, we were never going to get everyone saying he’s the right man but overall I think he’s a very good appointment,” he said.
“The one thing I do know is that around the people I’ve spoken to in football since this was mooted is that he’s an outstanding coach and that’s exactly what we need at the moment - to get the players playing.”
The important thing for Newcastle moving forward is that there’s unity and that everyone can pull together for the good of the team and the club.
The fans just want to see some ambition in the transfer market and a team that cares about playing a healthy and positive brand of football, which can create some excitement.
McClaren may not excite a lot of fans but he has the experience and the contacts to help the side move forward.
He’ll have ideas over the best way to address the problems, which existed last season and the problems, which caused the club to nearly get relegated from the top flight.
McClaren will likely be aware that some groups will be sceptical of his appointment and he needs to win them over, with some good performances in pre-season, heading into the next campaign.
Pre-season will give the fans a good idea of the sort of football they can expect from Newcastle under McClaren and it will give the boss a good idea of the problems they still have to address.
