Mesut Ozil endorses reported Manchester United and Arsenal targets Mats Hummels and Benedikt Howedes

The German midfielder believes both of his international colleagues are suited to the Premier League.

In a move which could incur the wrath of the Arsenal support, Mesut Ozil has given his backing to Manchester United’s number one defensive target Mats Hummels.

Hummels has been repeatedly linked with United over the last six months and Metro insists that a deal to bring the German star to Old Trafford is close to completion.

In an interview with Bild, Arsenal midfielder Ozil suggested both Hummels and Arsenal-linked defender Benedikt Howedes could make the grade in England.

"Mats and Benedikt have the qualities to make a mark at a big club here – if they want to, and that is obviously up to the individual to decide."

He went on to speak more broadly about the attraction of the Premier League - a league which he feels has no equal in world football.

"I would recommend any player to come to England. The Premier League is the best league in the world," said the 26-year-old.

"Here there are not only two teams fighting for the title but three or four and every team can beat any other team."

Mats Hummels has been a long-term target of Manchester United, with Louis van Gaal a known admirer, and Ozil’s words will do no harm to their pursuit.

Howedes is reportedly close to an Arsenal move and this latest Ozil interview could well be a not-so-subtle hint to Arsene Wenger to get a deal for the FC Schalke captain wrapped up.
