With his contract running out at the end of next season, Marseille find themselves in a pickle as to whether they should cash in on him now or risk losing him for nothing in 12 months.
Everton boss Roberto Martinez is keen on bolstering the Toffees' defence this summer, and reports in May revealed his visit to the south of France in order to watch N’Koulou first-hand.
However, according to the latest reports in Le10sport, the Spanish boss isn’t alone in his interest and the Toffees could find themselves beaten to the punch by French giants Lyon.
“If he leaves Marseille, I think he will be interested in Lyon. This is what I was told by his agent. If he doesn’t leave, next year he will be free and we’ll certainly be interested again,” the Lyon owner remarked.
The 25-year-old is predominantly a centre-back, although his physique and wonderful passing range means he is also comfortable at playing as a defensive midfielder.
Born in Cameroon, N’Koulou started 23 top-flight matches for Marseille last season, averaging an impressive 3.3 interceptions and 6.6 effective clearances per league encounter.
