The Croatia international only joined Atletico Madrid from Bayern Munich last summer, but a rather disappointing debut campaign at the Vicente Calderon has sparked rumours of an exit.
Mandzukic previously played for Wolfsburg prior to moving to Munich, and if the latest reports are to be believed he could be about to return there as a replacement for prolific striker Bas Dost.
“One of the teams most interested in Mandzukic is Wolfsburg. The German side will make a move for the Croatia international if Bas Dost finally seals his departure. The Wolves’ top scorer wants to try his luck in another league and is considering a bid from Newcastle,” AS reports.
The speculation revolving around Dost’s potential move to Newcastle has intensified in recent days after it became apparent the striker held talks with new boss Steve McClaren, as per a report in AD.nl.
The twice-capped Dutch international would be a superb acquisition for the Magpies, especially considering his renowned predatory touch in front of goal.
Last season, Dost wowed onlookers by netting a remarkable 16 Bundesliga goals from just 39 shots in total – a European best conversion rate of 41%.
However, in spite of his goal scoring run, for large parts of the campaign the 26-year-old wasn't considered a regular starter for the Bundesliga runners-up.
With Mandzukic very much on the club’s radar regardless of Dost’s intentions, it can only help Newcastle in their quest to persuade the striker to trade Germany for the Premier League.
