A recent report from the Mirror claimed Bayern Munich have balked at the £44million asking price Manchester United reportedly had for club-record signing Angel Di Maria, but is there any chance the German champions could move for the Argentine international this summer.
Former footballer turned journalist Jan Aage Fjortoft has taken to Twitter to suggest the idea is not beyond the realms of possibility, with circumstances at the Allianz Arena meaning a move for the United star could make sense.
Writing on the social media site on Sunday morning, Fjortoft said, “Di Maria to Bayern? Well! (Franck) Ribery out for a long time. (Arjen) Robben on and off with injuries. Possible…but they need a good deal.”
United signed di Maria from Real Madrid last summer for £59.7million but despite starting his time at Old Trafford in blistering form, he quickly tailed off, ending the campaign with just four goals in 32 matches.
He did however provide 12 assists in that time and there is a theory that he will be considerably more effective for Louis van Gaal’s side in his second season at the club.
Only time will tell if that is the case, provided of course United do not opt to cash-in on the 27-year-old.
Fjortoft certainly thinks Bayern could be a realistic destination, but at his best Di Maria is a spectacular footballer and United fans will still be hoping to see that week in, week out.
