The Manchester United forward was just two goals short of Bobby Charlton's England record heading into the Euro 2016 qualifier but a shoddy first half saw England go into the break 1-0 down and with Rooney having done very little.
And former Newcastle and England striker Shearer took to Twitter to mock the 29-year-old as a result...
It's ok. We'll be fine when Roy brings Rooney on at half time— Alan Shearer (@alanshearer) June 14, 2015
In a sense, Shearer was right: as Rooney went on to score the winner deep into the second half. Jack Wilshere scored twice and this was still another poor England performance.
But the result went the Three Lions' way and Manchester United man Rooney drew level with Gary Lineker in the all-time England goalscorers list.
As always, Lineker went for a bit of bland humour in response on Twitter, seeming genuinely pleased for the 29-year-old:
Welcome to the 48 club @WayneRooney . And thank you for making young folk aware that I once played a bit and don't just flog crisps.— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) June 14, 2015
Rooney got there in the end against Slovenia, then, as is often the case with the Manchester United forward. He underwhelmed and missed chances throughout but ultimately settled the game. Classic Rooney.
