Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil grabbed a hat-trick of assists as World Champions Germany routed minnows Gibraltar 7-0 in the Portuguese Algarve.
Footballing newcomers Gibraltar are competing in their first ever major tournament qualifying section and were remarkably paired in the same group as recent World Cup winners Germany.
It’s a mismatch of large proportions, but that didn’t stop popular coach Jurgen Loew from selecting a strong starting XI, including Bayern Munich’s Bastian Schweinsteiger and Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil.
Playing in an experimental back-three formation, the European powerhouses took their time to get going but really drove home their dominance in the second period.

As per the table above, Ozil was heavily involved throughout and contributed with a unique feat of three assists – the first time he has accomplished this in an international fixture.
Aside from his assists, the Gunners’ record signing took 108 touches in total, made a game-high five key passes and tested the opposition goalkeeper on two occasions.
Yet, arguably Ozil’s most impressive tally of the night was his four tackles, illustrating his willingness to track back and regain possession for his team.
Gibraltar were never going to trouble Germany, but that didn’t stop the visitors from acting utterly professionally and being completely ruthless during a six-goal blitz in the second period.
Tougher opposition certainly awaits Ozil and his teammates, though a victory in such fashion will be a timely morale-booster following the German’s disappointing friendly loss to the USA in midweek.
