What Richard Keys found ‘pathetic’ about Steve McClaren appointment

Former Nottingham Forest, Middlesbrough and Derby County manager Steve McClaren was appointed the Newcastle United head coach earlier this week.

Well-known sports presenter Richard Keys has suggested on his personal website that he was far from impressed with his way Steve McClaren was unveiled as the Newcastle United head coach earlier this week.

The former Nottingham Forest, Middlesbrough and Derby County boss’s unveiling was done in front of just two press organisations.

Former Sky Sports presenter Keys was not impressed with the way the presentation was handled.

“How silly that yesterday's unveiling of McClaren was attended only by the two Press organisations,” the Englishman wrote on his personal website. “Pathetic. Not becoming of a fine club. What on earth next?

“McClaren I like. A lot. But he did himself no favours taking over in those circumstances. What a missed opportunity to let everybody at the Toon - importantly supporters first - and those who 'currently' own the club 'I'm in charge'.

“A new era, already scarred by the deep cuts and injuries inflicted on the club by its 'own'. Sad. McClaren will only succeed there if he gets everybody, and I mean everybody, on side.”

Many Newcastle fans will agree with McClaren, but the key issue now is for the club to move forward and show more ambition in the transfer market.

The Magpies narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League, and there is no doubt that the squad needs an overhaul.

McClaren will have to sign some very good players and make the team competitive for the 2015-16 campaign.

Perhaps a top-10 finish in the Premier League next season will be beyond Newcastle, but they simply cannot afford to be battling relegation once again.
