Report: McClaren identifies Georginio Wijnaldum as key Newcastle summer target

St James Park

PSV Eindhoven midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is a reported transfer target for Newcastle.

According to a report from The Northern Echo, Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren has made PSV Eindhoven midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum one of his first transfer targets.

McClaren, 54, arrived as Newcastle manager earlier this week, penning an initial three-year contract at St. James' Park after the departure of interim boss John Carver.

The former England boss left Derby County last month but hasn't taken long to get back into football, taking the reins on Tyneside despite the Magpies only narrowly avoiding relegation to the Championship on the final day of the Premier League season.

McClaren will need to strengthen his squad ahead of the new campaign, and The Northern Echo believe that Dutch star Wijnaldum is one of his top targets.

The 24-year-old will have impressed ex-Twente manager McClaren in the Eredivisie, having not only starred for PSV but also former club Feyenoord.

With 18 goals from midfield this season, the Dutch international was key to Phillip Cocu's side as they won the Eredivisie title, even though Manchester United-bound Memphis Depay stole much of the limelight.

The report states that Wijnaldum is valued at around £15m, which may be slightly more than Newcastle are willing to pay for one player; but with pace, skill and versatility, Wijnaldum could certainly improve the Magpies midfield - if they can land him.
