On this day eight years ago, Arsenal beat Manchester United to £5m Aaron Ramsey signing

Arsenal Emirates

Eight years ago today it was Arsenal who had the last laugh when they signed a young talent who looked on the verge of moving to Manchester United.

It was June 3 2008 when Manchester United published a story on their official website announcing that they had agreed a fee with Cardiff City for the transfer of Aaron Ramsey.

There was still work to be done, with other clubs also in the running and the player still to agree personal terms, but the fact that United had published the news suggested they were confident of getting a deal over the line.

But 10 days later, after a fine display of player relations from Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, it was the Gunners who signed the teenager for £5million.

That was eight years ago today, and since then the Welshman has proved to be a wonderful addition to Arsenal’s side, playing 225 matches for the North London club, scoring 37 goals and providing 35 assists to date.

United were left to rue a missed opportunity, with a face-to-face meeting between Ramsey and Wenger attributed as a key reason for the midfielder’s decision.

Eight years on and Ramsey is a key player for Arsenal, and one whose best years should still be ahead of him.
