The England international has really come into his own over the past 12 months, shining in Villa’s midfield and establishing himself as a first-team regular in the national team.
With a solid passing range, an ability to create in the final third and a willingness to defend stoutly, Delph has the attributes in his locker to be considered an all-round midfielder.
Yet, the Villa favourite isn’t willing to sit on his laurels and wants to improve further – pinpointing departing Liverpool icon Gerrard and England teammate Carrick as players who specialise in their midfield roles.
"I want to improve and get better in every aspect. I want to be more influential in games. I watch quite a bit of football and try to watch midfielders closely and see what they are doing,” Delph admitted.
"I'm a big admirer of players like Gerrard and Carrick. I'd like to be an all-round midfielder and try to take a bit from everyone I've seen and played with."
Could Fabian Delph emulate Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard?
Over the course of his career, MLS-bound Steven Gerrard has played in a number of midfield roles for Liverpool with the same outcome – overriding success.
While Delph physically isn’t as imposing as the Anfield hero, he can learn to be just as influential by combining his abilities with his newfound leadership at Villa Park.
The 25-year-old played 27 Premier League matches last season, though after failing to find the net, his first area of improvement must be his productivity in the final third.
