Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson was in fine form as England edged out Belarus with a narrow 1-0 win ahead of the under-21 European Championship later this month.
Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson got the only goal of the game as England pleased and frustrated in equal measure, but the plaudits were shared around the pitch as Jenkinson found himself singled out on Twitter for his performance.
The right-back, who has just returned to Arsenal from a loan spell with West Ham United, was lauded for his speed and stamina as he bossed the right side of the pitch and controlled everything that went in and out.
He never looked troubled defensively and was always an option for his teammates on the right, with one supporter even comparing to Real Madrid star Gareth Bale.
Watching Carl Jenkinson for the U21s and I honestly think he could be the next Bale (full back turned superstar winger). Very impressive.— James Stokes (@stokiejoe22) June 11, 2015
Not having Will Hughes at all one paced and wasteful in possession. Jenkinson and Redmond impressive @england U21— Steve Curry (@stevecurry1970) June 11, 2015
Watching England under 21s both Garbutt and Jenkinson look impressive, two full backs I would like to see at #Ncfc— Josh Roper⚽️ (@Josh_Roper) June 11, 2015
Jenkinson looking very promising for 21's if he improved defensively he'd be knocking on our first team door for sure— Matt (@itsmattray) June 11, 2015
Jenkinson has been a key member of the England under-21 side for some time now and was desperately unlucky to miss out on the England under-21 player of the year award, which was won by Harry Kane.
He has proved, mainly during his loan spell at West Ham, that he is a Premier League standard player and can offer Arsenal a significant boost ahead of next season as his progression as been so rapid.
If England under-21s are to win the European Championship within the next month then they will need Jenkinson, among others, to be at their very best in order to topple the German, Spanish and French sides.
