The Northern Echo has reported that Newcastle United manager is looking for specific qualities in his assistant at St James’s Park.
Only two ‘preferred partners’ in the form of Sky Sports and the Daily Mirror were allowed to attend McClaren’s official unveiling as the club’s manager, as he looks to start work as Newcastle’s boss.
The Echo suggests that McClaren wants an assistant who has a proven track record in terms of winning competitions at previous clubs.
That makes sense considering the reported aim he’s been given of pushing for a top eight finish in the Premier League, while trying to win one of the domestic club competitions.
The paper also suggests that McClaren wants someone next to him who carries weight and presence in terms of the dressing room and striking the right sort of image in relation to the players.
It’s not going to be difficult for McClaren to build on the struggles the club experienced over the second half of last season under John Carver and it’s important that he can get the right support around him at the club.
McClaren needs individuals he can bounce ideas off of as well as individuals who can help to take a little bit of the pressure away from him, when the team doesn’t play so well.
