Cottee: It will be interesting to see what Bilic does with Carroll

Former West Ham United striker Tony Cottee suggests Andy Carroll could be the difference for the club next season.

Former West Ham United striker Tony Cottee told talkSPORT he thinks it will be fascinating to see what Slaven Bilic does with Andy Carroll.

The former Hammers defender has been confirmed as the club’s next manager and he will be tasked with bringing new players into the squad as well as revitalising the options he already has.

One attacking option is the big centre forward, who Cottee feels is a unique player compared to other strikers currently contracted to Premier League clubs.

“Sometimes you watch him and he’s unplayable. There aren’t too many players like him in the Premier League. He gives you a wonderful option but whether that option should be him starting the match or coming on as a sub, I don’t know – We’ll have to wait and see what he (Bilic) decides,” he said.

Bilic is a manager who will want West Ham to play a healthy brand of possession based football, building pressure over their opposition and utilising wide areas.

Carroll offers the option for Bilic to get West Ham playing more directly and he’s also someone who can thrive with service from wide areas.

His challenge for next season will be to stay fit and to be consistent when the boss gives him a chance in the team.

Carroll missed a large portion of last season because of surgery on a knee problem, but he will be aiming to feature in pre-season ahead of the new campaign.

Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia also provide the boss with attacking options and the release of Carlton Cole also suggests Bilic will bring in another attacking player.

If Carroll stays fit and shows that unplayable ability every week, he could be right at the top of the pecking order.
