On Wednesday, Manchester United revealed the news, as reported by the Mirror, that under-21 captain Tom Thorpe will not be offered a new deal.
The news that the 22-year-old will be allowed to leave United on a free transfer has baffled some supporters, as he had been tipped as a potential star for the future.
For the past three seasons, the former England under-21 defender has been named captain of United’s under-21 side and has been at the heart of a lot of their success. Nevertheless, was overlooked in favour of under-21 teammates Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett when it came to a first team call-up.
The more vocal supporters took to Twitter to rage about the decision made the club, with some suggesting it will be one they later come to regret.

Hope Man Utd don't regret letting Tom Thorpe go - looked better than McNair and Blackett - hopefully not another Pogba #utd— James Starbuck (@JamesStarbuck1) June 10, 2015
Hope Tom Thorpe is not another Paul Pogba... We'll be begging him to come back in two years time.— Moe. (@moeswaidan) June 10, 2015
Gutted for Tom Thorpe. He is a better centre half than Blackett and McNair. All the best for the future, hope he stays in the PL. #mufc— OleMUFC (@OleMUFC) June 10, 2015

So Ben Amos and Tom Thorpe officially given free transfers. A bit speechless about the latter to be honest...most know my views...good luck!— The MUFC Academy (@mrmujac) June 10, 2015
Tom Thorpe deserved his chances. Such a good player. I thought he was going to be a good player. Hope he is not another Shawcross. #MUFC— Abhash MUFC (@abhashmufc) June 10, 2015
At 22, and having not made a big impact on the first-team up to now, it’s probably in everyone’s best interest for the player to move on.
Thorpe, while he may get offers from Premier League clubs due to his reputation, now more than ever needs to find a club where he can become a regular starter in the side.
A move to one of the top Championship clubs could be his best bet as he looks to finally get his senior career up and running.
