Report: Seemingly Spanish-bound wonderkid Celtic target Zakaria Bakkali performs massive U-turn, agrees to join Benfica

Zakaria Bakkali

The Belgian youngster is on his way to Portugal not Spain, according to reports.

Celtic and Stoke City were dealt a blow yesterday as it was reported by press in Spain that Zakaria Bakkali was on his way to Sevilla.

The former PSV wonderkid, once dubbed the 'next Eden Hazard' is out of contract and has been wanted by Celtic and Stoke for some time.

Celtic were linked by The Herald last week and the Stoke Sentinel reported that The Potters were also keen on his signature.

However, Estadio Deportivo reported yesterday that Bakkali had agreed to join the Europa League champions and it seemed official confirmation was all that was left.

Now, that has changed, according to reports in Portugal.

A Bola claims that Bakkali has performed a massive U-turn and has decided to head to Benfica instead, joining up with former QPR star Adel Taarabt in Lisbon.

The news is still yet to be confirmed but the press in Portugal are adamant that Bakkali has agreed a deal. Belgian source DH Net also confirmed talks between the two clubs, but stopped short of saying a deal was done.

The former Celtic target was once considered one of Europe's hottest talents but his recent issues off the pitch has seen his stock plummet at PSV, who will be pleased to be shot of him.

Wherever he ends up, Benfica or Sevilla, they will have a character to tame in order to get the best from his talents.

Celtic and Stoke might be better off without him.
