Report: Liverpool have no plans to let Lazar Markovic leave

Reports emerged this morning suggesting Benfica were keen for the Serb to return to Lisbon, but the Reds have no plans to let Markovic leave.

Liverpool are unlikely to let Lazar Markovic leave this summer, according to a report in the Liverpool Echo, after rumours surfaced in Portugal linking him with a swift return to Benfica.

Many fans on Twitter were unhappy at the prospect of letting the Serbian leave after just the one season on Merseyside.

The Reds parted with £20 million – per the BBC - to bring the winger to Anfield but he has yet to really find his feet in England, despite the odd performance which has shown a hint of promise.

Some would put his lack of consistency down to not being played in his preferred position, but it seems as though he will get the chance to impress next season and earn his place in the side.

There have been times this season when he hasn't managed to put a string of performances together - given the changes Brendan Rodgers decided to make to the team, which saw Markovic play as a winger, in a more central position behind the forward and as a wing-back appearing on both flanks.

With the ongoing saga surrounding Raheem Sterling, there may an opportunity for Markovic to stake his claim for a starting berth if the England international were to depart the club. With the uncertainty over Sterling's future being played out in public, it looks as though he could leave Anfield this summer unless Liverpool really dig their heels in.

Liverpool have parted with a lot of money for Markovic and his best years are clearly ahead of him, and it would seem foolish to allow him to leave when he hasn't really settled or had the opportunity to impress. There are going to be plenty of chances next season for Rodgers to rotate his side and give the Serbian the opportunity to show what he can do.
