According to the Statesman, Arsenal are close to naming Schalke captain Benedikt Howedes as their first signing of the summer.
The report states that Howedes is set to join the Gunners, teaming up with Mesut Ozil and Per Mertesacker, as national team coach Joachim Low is eager for his players to sort their respective futures out as quickly as possible.
Last week, according to German Publication Kicker, Arsene Wenger had made a firm approach for the 27-year-old and now it seems the potential transfer could have moved forward.
Would Howedes be a good signing for Arsenal?
Howedes made 28 starts for the Bundesliga side last season and his impressive performances, along with his versatility, look to be the major reason behind the Gunners’ reported interest in the player.
He is naturally a leader, as shown by the captaincy he currently holds with Schalke, and has played at the highest level while in Germany.
He would be an extremely good option for Wenger in any of the defensive positions, so would automatically become an integral part of the matchday squad.
Now, reaching the peak of his career, the German will undoubtedly want to win a league title after watching his side fall short in his home nation.
Arsenal have shown in 2015 that they are ready to be a serious contender for Premier League crown next season and if they can strengthen and bolster their squad with players like Howedes, it will do their chances no harm at all.
