Newcastle United fans have reacted with delight as rumours emerge of Mike Williamson's potential departure from the club.
The defender has experience playing in the division after signing with Newcastle during their stint in the Championship, and has gone on to make more than 160 appearances for the club.
Now 31, he appears to have worn out his welcome at Newcastle, despite having one year remaining on his contract.
He was involved in a public row with former boss John Carver at the end of the season after his sending off in a defeat to Leicester City, when he was accused of taking the easy way out to earn suspension so he would not have to play the final games of the season.
Williamson denied the suggestion, telling the BBC there was no intent and playing for the club was an honour, but the episode only served to lower his sinking reputation among fans.
Discontent aimed in Williamson's direction is about more than his dismissal, for he is perceived as not being up to scratch to represent the club in the future, last season making two errors which directly led to goals.
A step down to Championship level, with Leeds or otherwise, may be his next best bet, and fans reacted positively to the suggestions he could be destined for a switch away from the club.
