Markovic signed for Liverpool last summer but there are reports suggesting he could make a swift return to Benfica.
Liverpool fans seem unhappy over the prospect that Lazar Markovic could be sold by the club this summer, if the reaction on Twitter is anything to go by.
Markovic was one of nine signings who arrived at Anfield last summer for a fee of £20 million from Benfica, but reports in Portugal from A Bola and Record, cited by Football365, suggest he could be making a return to the club after just the one season on Merseyside.
The Serbian has struggled to fit but has shown he does possess some quality, while manager Brendan Rodgers has failed to find a role for him in the side as he has rarely been used in a position that many think is suited to him.
There have been times he has started on the right wing, in wing-back positions, when the system of the side has been changed, and in a more central role behind the strikers.
In his debut season Markovic managed to find the net on three occasions: in a League Cup quarter-final win over Bournemouth, and in Premier League wins over Sunderland and Tottenham.
But as the season got close to its conclusion, when Markovic was given a chance from the start, you would often see him taken off at half-time, which suggests he either hasn't impressed Rodgers or has suffered a lack of confidence.
The unrest on Twitter seems to come from those who feel he hasn't had a fair chance in his first season at the club, and people that feel he hasn't been played in a position the Serb feels comfortable with often enough.
Here is a flavour of what has been said:
Of all our signings Markovic intrigued me the most. Genuinely talented. Just needs to be played in right position and some good coaching!— Liverpool Australia (@LFC_Australia) June 11, 2015
Imagine if Markovic was let go without ever getting a chance in his favoured position, and with Sterling refusing to sign a new deal.— Joseph Musker (@Musker_LFC) June 11, 2015
I will be extremely angry if we sell Markovic Play him out of position then sell him because he's deemed not 'good enough'? Absolute Insult— Liverpool Family (@lfc_family) June 11, 2015
Imagine selling Markovic after one season. A young player from a foreign league for big money and not giving him a proper chance.— liverpoolstuff (@liverpooIstuff) June 11, 2015
Hate Markovic me. But selling him after one season where he hasn't been played in the right position is crazy.— El Nemœ (@FutbolMoe) June 11, 2015
Ive slagged #Markovic a few times season just gone but he's got HUGE potential. Played in the correct position, he'll become brilliant.— Connor (@ConnorwilsonLFC) June 11, 2015
Really hope Lazar Markovic stays at #LFC this summer. It would be a mistake to let him go before even giving him a proper chance to settle.— Tom_LFC8 (@Tom_LFC8) June 11, 2015
If Markovic is allowed to go when hes barely been given a chance in his natural role, and still young, raw and learning its a shocking call— Ste Davies (@StevenD1977) June 11, 2015
