Liverpool face battle with Sevilla for Barca's Martin Montoya

The Reds are going to have to work hard to bring in the Barcelona fullback, according to reports.

Liverpool have been credited with a long standing interest in Barcelona fullback Martin Montoya, though hopes to sign the former Spanish Under-21 star may have floundered a little with news in Marca that another side are also pursuing him.

The Telegraph have become the latest side to state Liverpool are pursuing a deal with the Spaniard, and he has every reason to be looking to leave his boyhood team, despite their recent Champions League success.

The 24-year-old had been making steady progress towards a first team spot at the Nou Camp, with patience being a necessary quality of many outstanding young players who hope to make the grade at Barca.

However, this season he made just 12 appearances for the first team. He may have been expecting the rumoured departure of Brazilian fullback Dani Alves to be the opportunity to step up from squad player to first choice right-back.

But things haven't gone Montoya's way, firstly Barcelona signed Aleix Vidal from Sevilla, and then Alves signed a new contract.

It means he is further than ever from getting first team football, and looks a certainty to leave.

However, despite Liverpool looking in pole position to snap up the defender, now Marca are reporting that Sevilla are going to replace Vidal with Montoya, and they'll be able to offer him Champions League football too after their Europa League win.

Even worse for the Reds is the news that Barca are looking to recall Denis Suarez halfway through his two-season loan from Los Rojiblancos, and may send Montoya to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in his place.

Either way, it looks like Liverpool have serious competition if they want to bring Montoya to Anfield to replace Glen Johnson.
