Highly-rated defender Alfie Mawson turns down new deal at Brentford

HITC Sport understands that Alfie Mawson has shunned the offer of fresh terms at Championship side Brentford.

HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club that Alfie Mawson has turned down the offer of a new deal at Championship side Brentford.

The 21-year-old defender committed to a 12-month contract with the Bees last summer, but was then sent out on loan to Wycombe Wanderers for the entire 2014/15 campaign.

He impressed greatly during his time with the League Two outfit, helping them to a fourth place finish and a crack at the play-offs.

Wycombe made it to Wembley, but came up short on the big day as they were edged out by Southend United on penalties.

Mawson still had plenty to celebrate, though, as he ended the season with 50 appearances, seven goals and numerous personal accolades – including Wycombe’s Supporters’ and Players’ Player of the Year awards.

Brentford, suitably impressed by his efforts in the fourth tier, put a new two-year deal to the youngster back in the spring, but those terms have been knocked back.

Mawson is now looking to make a fresh start away from Griffin Park, although the Bees will be entitled to compensation from any deal as the talented centre-half is a product of their academy system and is under the age of 24.
