World Cup golden ball winner and two-time recipient of the European Golden Shoe Diego Forlan looks set to return to Uruguay this summer.
The 36-year-old forward is familiar to Manchester United fans, having played for the Red Devils for just over three seasons during the early part of his career in Europe.
Forlan managed just 17 goals in 98 appearances for United but fared much better in Spain's La Liga, where he was prolific for both Villarreal and later Atletico Madrid.
Having left Europe for Brazil with Internacional, the Uruguayan's most recent adventure took him to Japan with Cerezo Osaka.
But after a disastrous first season in which the club was relegated from the J-League, it was decided earlier this month that the player's $5.8 million-a-year contact would not be renewed.
Forlan had fared better in the Japanese second tier this term, scoring 10 goals in 14 outings.
However his Asian experience now looks set to end with Ovacion Digital reporting that the striker is set to sign a deal with Penarol.
Should it be completed, then the move will most likely spell the end of Forlan's career in Europe or Asia.
Despite his poor record for United though, Red Devils fans will always remember the forward for finding the net against eternal rivals Liverpool.
