In an interview with soccernews.nl, De Telegraaf reporter Mike Verweij has said that he believes Ajax goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen will become a Manchester United player should David de Gea leave this summer.
The respected journalist, who covers Ajax quite closely, said: ‘’I think if David de Gea does indeed go to Real Madrid, Manchester United signing Jasper Cillessen will come true.’’
The 26-year-old, who became Holland’s first-choice goalkeeper under Louis van Gaal, has been in fantastic form this season and is firmly rated as the best goalkeeper in the country.
Last season, although Ajax didn’t have the campaign they wanted, the defensive side of their game was formidable.
The Amsterdam-based side conceded just 29 goals in 34 games in the Eredivisie, two fewer than run away champions PSV Eindhoven.
Would Cillessen be a good signing for United?
He is a ‘keeper that Van Gaal will know well and can trust between the sticks.
Losing De Gea, if he does go, will be a huge blow because of the quality he possesses but Cillessen will go a long way to addressing that problem.
As he is still relatively young for a goalkeeper, he has huge potential to go up in value and ability – a trait Van Gaal seems keen on bringing to Old Trafford as he puts more emphasis on youth.
Cillessen would be more of a gamble than the likes of Petr Cech. However, he could be a gamble that pays off handsomely.
