A look at how Derby County fans reacted to Steve McClaren's appointment as Newcastle boss.

Steve McClaren confounded the way he failed to get Derby promoted from a strong position mid-way through the season, to still land a Premier League role after being sacked.

Newcastle United announced on their official website that McClaren has been appointed as their next boss, with the former England manager landing a three year deal.

Speculation over a move to Newcastle was widely seen as in part to blame for Derby's poor end to the season.

While the Rams were in play-off contention, having slipped out of the automatic promotion places, rumours began to emerge that he could be in line to take over from John Carver as Newcastle manager.

Derby suffered a surprise collapse on the final day of the season and missed the play-offs entirely, and McClaren was later subsequently sacked, replaced with Carlo Ancelotti's former Real Madrid assistant Paul Clement.

Upon his appointment as Newcastle boss, McClaren was quoted by the GazetteLive newspaper, stating: "I always wanted to join Newcastle. They're one of the biggest clubs in Europe."

These comments did not go down well among Derby fans, with his words seen as confirmation of his distracted stance during the final weeks of the club's season.

With the Rams now facing another battle to earn promotion, there is a sense of bitterness that McClaren has landed a plum job in the league they are aspiring to earn the right to play in.
