Real Salt Lake's Nick Rimando was moved to hail his fellow USA keeper after his shot-stopping heroics helped Jurgen Klinsmann's men earn a shock 2-1 win over the world champions.
Midfielder Mix Diskerud equaliser just before half-time after Mario Gotze had given the hosts an early lead, before substitute Bobby Wood once again played the hero.
Having come on to grab a stoppage-time winner in last week’s dramatic 4-3 comeback victory over the Netherlands in Amsterdam, the 22-year-old striker repeated his late-game heroics with an 88th-minute finish to hand the USA their first ever defeat of the world champions on German soil.
However, while Wood’s game-winning exploits earned him most of the headlines after the match, the back-to-back victories over major European opposition would not have been possible were it not for the presence of Guzan between the posts.
The Villa keeper has endured a tough couple of months after being benched during the Premier League run-in but he put those problems aside at the RheinEnergieStadion with a second straight dominant performance, making a number of crucial saves to help keep his side in the match.
While he has been competing for the number one spot with Real Salt Lake’s Nick Rimando during Tim Howard’s self-imposed international sabbatical, the Chicago-native has now been named as the starter for next month’s Gold Cup and could well have a chance of holding onto the job ahead of the Everton veteran’s return in September should be impress.
Nevertheless, despite the fierce competition for minutes, the goalkeepers still appear to share a great relationship with one another, with Rimando one of the first to take to Twitter to congratulate his teammate for his performance after last night’s win.
He was not alone in celebrating on social media at the final whistle, though, as several other members of the squad and notable absentees also chimed in on the historic result.
