The skilful Moroccan was unable to be a consistent success at Tottenham or QPR, and is now said to be heading to Portugal to continue his career.
His contract was set to expire in 2016, but the R's have released someone who they see as having no future at Loftus Road, despite his earlier heroics in the Championship.
Taarabt, who featured just 8 times last season as QPR were relegated, impressed in spells during his loan to AC Milan in 2014, and it is very possible that a player of his flair and technique will be afforded more time on the ball in Portugal than the relentless Premier League.
But the Moroccan managed to star in the Championship in the 2010-11 season, helping the Hoops to the title, so there is little doubt that the 26-year-old could have succeeded in England, if only he met the right manager or sought to push his fitness a little further once QPR were in the Premier League.
Wherever the former Spurs man ends up, if it's at Benfica or elsewhere, there will be a hope among all football fans, not just Tottenham and QPR supporters, that someone will be able to show Taarabt the right path to demonstrate his talent. Because even though everyone laughed when he talked of moves to Barcelona and Real Madrid, the well of technical ability he has to draw on isn't unlike that of some of the most skilful in world football.
Only time will tell whether he'll ever get the chance to demonstrate that full potential.
