Newcastle fans react on Twitter to Steve McClaren's arrival as new manager

Steve McClaren

Newcastle fans were fairly split as Steve McClaren arrived as the club's new manager.

Newcastle United today confirmed on their official website that Steve McClaren has been appointed as the club's new manager.

McClaren, 54, left Derby County last month having failed to take the Rams into the Championship play-off place, but has fallen on his feet having landed a new job almost immediately.

The former England boss has penned an initial three-year deal to become Newcastle manager, though the Magpies have the option to extend that to an eight-year deal should McClaren impress at St. James' Park.

Newcastle have struggled in recent years and even needed a 2-0 home win over West Ham United on the final day of the Premier League season to secure their survival, with caretaker manager John Carver struggling for results.

McClaren has now replaced Carver as Newcastle look to pull themselves away from the relegation zone next season, with McClaren returning to Premier League football for the first time since leaving Middlesbrough in 2006.

Fans have been reacting on Twitter ever since the announcement, with two camps emerging; one half of fans are excited by the appointment and believe that McClaren brings a proven track record with him to Tyneside, whilst the other have are underwhelmed and believe the Magpies could - and should - have appointed somebody else.

Here are some of the reactions from Newcastle fans as McClaren assumes his new role as Magpies manager today...
