Manchester United have let five players go as they prepare to revamp their squad ahead of next season.
Manchester United have announced on their official website that five players will be leaving the club on free transfers this summer.
The least surprising name on the list is midfielder Tom Cleverley, who has already agreed to join Everton on July 1.
Although it has been suggested for some time, Thorpe’s exit is surprising given his talent and his progress in the under-21s.
Given that he was skipper of the side it was surprising when both Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair got their first-team chances ahead of Thorpe, and while the latter did make his senior United debut as a late substitute against West Ham United he was not seen again in that capacity.
Thorpe may well wonder where it all went wrong, with McNair in particular benefitting from United’s defensive issues at the start of the campaign where many expected the 22-year-old to instead step in.
But for Thorpe and the other four players it is time they headed for pastures new, with United wishing them all the best in their future endeavours.
