Key Arsenal star Olivier Giroud injured on international duty, leaves training on crutches

Giroud Celebrates

Olivier Giroud is a doubt for France's upcoming fixture after suffering an injury in training.

The striker went down clutching his calf during Tuesday's training session, report French radio station RMC, asking for ice to soothe the pain.

RMC added: "Leaving the field, injured Giroud had taken crutches. A car was waiting at the exit to transport the former player of Montpellier, who returned to the vehicle limping and grimacing."

They add it is too early to assess whether he will be eligible to play this weekend for his country.

France have only a friendly against Albania to play on Saturday, and the sensible approach from manager Didier Deschamps would be to release the striker from duty.

Giroud played a key role for Arsenal during their impressive run of form in the New Year, and while he lost his place in the side for the FA Cup Final to Theo Walcott, he remains generally considered as the club's first choice striker.

His injury is unlikely to be anything which affects even his pre-season, but if France do push him to play while not 100 per cent then they risk a more serious problem.

Arsenal have been unlucky in recent times with players getting injured on international duty, but if there was ever a convenient time for it to happen then this was it, with Arsenal not having a competitive game until August.
