Joey Barton reacts on Twitter to Newcastle appointing Steve McClaren

Former Newcastle star approves of the appointment.

Outspoken former Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton has praised the club's decision to appoint Steve McClaren as boss.

Newcastle announced the news via their official website on Wednesday evening, with managing director Lee Charnley describing him as a 'perfect fit' for the club.

Barton subsequently took to Twitter to give his view, that the club had made the right decision.

Barton is a regular critic of Newcastle, so his approval perhaps comes as a little surprise; just days ago the Shields Gazette reported how he urged striker and ex-QPR teammate Charlie Austin not to join the club, citing instability.

The midfielder is currently a free agent after the Hoops decided to release him upon their relegation to the Championship.

Barton, 32, perhaps has reason to like McClaren. The former Middlesbrough and Derby boss handed him his one and only international cap for England for a friendly against Spain in 2007. It is the only time he has worked under the new Newcastle boss, and surely, the last.
