Bent was recently released from the Villa Park club and joined Championship side Derby County, but he’s stressed it’s vital for Tim Sherwood to keep the Dutch defender in his backline for next season.
The Daily Express reported last winter that Manchester United and Arsenal were both interested in the player and it remains to be seen whether he extends his deal beyond the end of this month.
“He’s a really good defender. It’s been frustrating for him because of injuries – He’s had little niggles here and there, but on top of his form as we saw at the World Cup, he’s probably one of the best defenders in the world – He’s so quick and he’s got everything to be a top defender,” he said.
Vlaar offers a great deal to the current Aston Villa side and it’s very important they make the best offer they can to keep him and to keep him happy.
He’s a very experienced player and someone who is key because of the experience he injects into the back four.
He also has leadership qualities, which help through difficult periods where the Aston Villa defence is under pressure and he’s a good man to have guiding the younger players at the club.
In terms of what he offers as a defender, he’s got a great burst of speed as Bent suggests and that allows him to cover for other players who are caught out of position.
He’s also strong, which is important given the physical nature of the Premier League and the direct tactics teams sometimes use against Sherwood’s men.
Whether Villa can keep him and get him to sign on the dotted line of a new deal remains to be seen.
