Andy Kellett: Manchester United's surprising loan signing did himself no harm at Old Trafford

Taking a look at Manchester United's other loan signing last season.

Earlier this year Manchester United made a somewhat surprising signing, bringing Bolton Wanderers defender Andy Kellett to Old Trafford on loan for the second half of the campaign.

Considering Kellett had only appeared four times for Bolton it was a move few expected, including the player himself. But with the season now over, how did Kellett get on at United?

The full-back was brought in specifically to add cover in the under-21s – with the likes of Saidy Janko and Guillermo Varela out on loan – and he featured regularly for United’s young side in the last few months.

By the end of the season Kellett had played nine times for Warren Joyce’s side, making his debut against Sunderland’s under-21s with a six-minute cameo on the left wing.

He again came off the bench a fortnight later against Tottenham but from then on he started regularly, with United undefeated and winning five of the six league matches in which Kellett played the full 90 minutes.

In fact the only defeat he experienced was the game in which he provided an assist in a 3-1 loss to Manchester City.

Kellett was never going to break into United’s first-team; he was signed very much to feature for Joyce’s side. But he can be proud of his efforts and the once-in-a-lifetime chance may just have turned his career around when it had only just begun.
