Southampton boss Ronald Koeman: Barcelona's Lionel Messi is the best ever

Ronald Koeman has entered the 'best player of all-time' debate, opting for Argentine Lionel Messi.

We could all sit here for a day, maybe a week, month or year, discussing who is the best player of all time.

The best player today brings up an argument between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, whereas it is just easier to sit back and enjoy their masterclass.

If there was a clear winner there would be no argument, but to settle it you could use the infamous ‘let's agree to disagree’ line and go on with your day.

Not Ronald Koeman though. The Southampton manager says he rates Messi higher than Pele, Johan Cruyff and Diego Maradona.

“Messi? He’s the best player of all time," Koeman told Marca.

"The talk of Pele, Cruyff, Messi, Maradona… no-one has been as decisive. For the goals he’s scored, how he scored them. He’s the greatest player of all time.”

Koeman does not even acknowledge Ronaldo which is harsh given there’s not a huge difference between Messi and the Portugese winger and that could cause some controversy.

The biggest thing of all and something the vast majority should agree with is how lucky this generation of football fans are to witness such outstanding athletes in the beautiful game.

All of us have grown up listening to stories about certain players but we will be the story tellers for Messi and Ronaldo. Head-to-head they’re always making history, breaking records and providing spectators with excellence. Long may that continue.
