According to Mike Keegan of the Daily Mail, Manchester United are hoping their positive relationship with Southampton will pave the way for Morgan Schneiderlin's switch to Old Trafford.
Last summer's straightforward transfer of Luke Shaw left both sides happy and United are said to be hopeful the same happens with Schneiderlin.
However, the difference with the Shaw deal is Southampton gained £31.5 million for an inexperienced left-back, who still has a lot to prove.
Schneiderlin comes with experience and looks ready to make the next leap in his career, fighting for Premier League titles and competing in Europe. That is at least what United are also hoping to achieve again.
The Daily Mail report also suggests that there is one stumbling block that could be van Gaal's complicated relationship with former protege and current Southampton manager Ronald Koeman, but that is unlikely to be a significant enough to stop a deal which is expected to be worth around £25 million.
