Report: Liverpool need to sell Raheem Sterling to fund Christian Benteke move

Liverpool and Chelsea are reportedly interested in Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke.

Liverpool need to sell Raheem Sterling in order to raise funds to sign Christian Benteke from Aston Villa this summer, according to The Sun.

It has been reported by the British tabloid that Reds manager Brendan Rodgers is working on a shoestring budget, claimed to be just £20 million.

The Northern Irishman is reported by The Sun to be “desperate to land Benteke”, but he needs to sell winger Sterling to fund that transfer.

“But unless Sterling goes for as much money as Liverpool can get for him now, the likelihood is Benteke will not be heading for Anfield,” states the report in The Sun.

Benteke is one of the best strikers in the Premier League and has been linked with a move away from Villa Park this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Chelsea are all interested in the Belgium international, according to The Sun.

Liverpool have just signed England Under-21 international Danny Ings on a free transfer after his contract with Burnley ran out, but the Reds still need another striker.

Daniel Sturridge is the Merseryside outfit’s first-choice centre-forward, but he struggled with injuries throughout the recently concluded 2014-15 campaign.

Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert both failed to make an impact at Anfield, while it would be a surprise if Fabio Borini remains at the club next season.
