Citfci netted 16 goals in 42 games for Dundee United last term, but it has now been confirmed by the official club website that he has refused the offer of a new contract, as he no longer wants to remain at Tannadice.
Ciftci’s current deal now runs until the summer of 2016, and having joined the club in 2013, the report states that he wants to seek a new challenge. He netted 33 goals in 82 games for the club, after spells with Portsmouth, Kayserispor and NAC Breda.
Celtic have been linked with making a move for Ciftci this summer, as per the Daily Mail, with Ronny Deila keen on brining the Turkish striker to Parkhead, along with teammate John Souttar.
Jackie McNamara has no wish to sell the 23-year-old forward, but with his confirmation that he will be leaving the club for free next summer, United may be pushed to sell him during this transfer window to guarantee they receive a fee for him.
This would go against McNamara’s wishes, but he may have no choice but to accept an offer from the Bhoys if they formalise an approach this summer.
Selling Ciftci to Celtic would be directly strengthening a rival, but at least moving him on this summer would cost the Bhoys’s something, rather than losing him on a free when his contract expires at the end of the next campaign.
