Manchester United ambassador Bryan Robson makes it clear he wants Chelsea star Petr Cech at Old Trafford

Manchester United global ambassador Bryan Robson has touted Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech as an ideal signing for United this summer - should David de Gea depart.

Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson has been quoted in the Express as saying Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech could be the new Edwin van der Sar for the Red Devils.

The 58-year-old, who spent the majority of his 23-year playing career with United, urged Louis van Gaal to look towards West London for David de Gea’s replacement should he leave the club this summer.

‘’It’s important to bring in players as soon as possible,’’ said Robson. ‘’If De Gea has to be replaced, Cech would be ideal – he could do for the club what Edwin van der Sar did.’’

De Gea has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid since the turn of the year and the Independent have recently reported the Spanish number one has told the United bosses he wants to leave this summer.

Nevertheless, the race to win Cech’s signature could prove to be just as tough as it would be to keep De Gea at the club following the interest in Czech Republic international.

Arsenal are said to be one of the leading candidates for the three-time Premier League Golden Glove winner with the Mirror, but the Mail believe Paris Saint-Germain could be an option for him too.

Would Cech be a good signing for United this summer?

If De Gea was to leave Old Trafford this summer then it’s imperative that a goalkeeper of a similar standard arrives in order to keep up the club’s progression, and Cech certainly fits that bill.

The experience Chelsea keeper has been arguably the best Premier League goalkeeper of the past decade and has the awards and accolades to show for it.

Although now considered the second choice at Chelsea, no team in world football would turn him down if given half a chance. Courtois just happens to be a better bet for the long-term as he’s 10-years younger.

Van Der Sar played into his forties at United, after signing from Fulham for £2million at 34, so it can be done with the correct discipline and coaching - both of which Van Gaal should be able to offer.
