‘Compare him to Ronaldo’ – TV pundit raves about exciting Manchester United prospect Memphis Depay

Ronaldo 7 United

Dutch journalist and MUTV pundit Thijs Slegers has been talking up Memphis Depay ahead of his move to Manchester United.

TV pundit and writer Thijs Slegers has told Manchester United’s official website that exciting new signing Memphis Depay should be compared to Cristiano Ronaldo, not Arjen Robben.

The Dutchman, who is a huge fan of Depay and backs him to make a big impact in the Premier League, believes he sees attributes of Ronaldo in the 21-year-old and praised his determination above all else.

"I don’t agree with the Robben comparison,’’ said Slegers. ‘’Arjen is like Peter Pan when he’s dribbling, from left to right, with samba in his hips, whereas Memphis is more about power.

‘’Memphis can dribble also, but when you see him move you can see the strength in his movement – this really scares defenders. Robben is a different style of player to that.

‘’Memphis is a little bit like Cristiano; they have similar qualities, although there are of course areas where Memphis is inferior. However, his determination to be the best is where I see the real similarity with Cristiano."

The endorsement by the journalist will come as no surprise to United fans who have met the signing with a lot of excitement.

At just 21, the winger still has a lot of time to develop his game even more despite already scoring 28 goals, with eight assists, in 40 appearances in the season just gone.

It’s certainly a record that deserves to get fans excited.

Can Depay become the next Ronaldo?

It’s difficult to say who will become the ‘next Ronaldo’ until they actually reach that level.

Many players, who have been built up just as much as Depay, have gone on to fail in the Premier League and there should definitely be an err of caution about his signing.

For example, in 2007, Nani was also touted as the next Ronaldo, but has since gone on to flop at Old Trafford as his development stunted soon after his move, showing talent, but very inconsistently.

It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that the youngster will become a huge success in England, perhaps even the next Ronaldo, but he will need to work hard to reap the rewards.
